Right age for braces

IS THERE A RIGHT AGE FOR BRACES?

Perhaps a good time to initiate braces treatment in a child would be around 9 to 11 years of age, when the milk teeth are in the process of falling off, the permanent teeth are on their way and the child is in a rapidly growing phase of life. The Orthodontist, after studying his/her X-ray pictures, teeth arrangement and face structure, would be the best person to recommend initiation of treatment.

NO ONE IS TOO OLD TO GET BRACES. As long as the gums & teeth are healthy, orthodontic treatment can be done for correcting the dental problem. At the other end of the spectrum, certain orthodontic procedures carried out much early in life help prevent major complications, later in life.

It is the knowledge and the skill of the QUALIFIED ORTHODONTIST, which will help decide the correct time to start the treatment, with the correct type of braces to deliver the best treatment results.

WHEN TO START BRACES TREATMENT?

Any age can be a good time to visit an orthodontist, and initiate Orthodontic treatment.

The Indian orthodontic Society along with all the Orthodontic Societies in the world, recommend that CHILD’S FIRST VISIT to an orthodontist be around the AGE OF SEVEN YEARS.

To be more specific, when the front four milk teeth, in the upper and/or lower jaw have shed & the permanent teeth are ON THEIR WAY, into position.

The Orthodontist will then evaluate the child’s teeth and facial structure and identify any abnormal developmental conditions which may require an early treatment. If everything is fine, the child is scheduled for an annual follow up. This will help make the best treatment decisions and ensure that the orthodontic treatment is initiated at the MOST APPROPRIATE time.

Need not fret, though, if you have missed this important age for orthodontic evaluation. It can very well be done at a later age.

Although the Orthodontic treatment is best done during growing years of a child, it is not exclusive to children and teens, with about one in every five orthodontic patients being over the age of 21. Whether you’re considering treatment for yourself or for a child, any time is a good time to visit the orthodontist.
